Anne Chen

You can usually find me in the school office in the afternoon working on a computer or answering phones. On weekday mornings, I work for my husband’s business, James Chen Photographer. James is an internationally active, commercial/architectural photographer and my main job is to keep his digital workflow running happily.

My husband and I also share a passion for two-wheeled vehicles. We are members of the Santa Barbara BMW Riders Club -- you may occasionally see my red R65 LS (650 cc) parked on campus.

However, my biggest passion is all about riding on skinny tires without a motor; in other words, road cycling. I am the women’s rep for a local club, Echelon Santa Barbara, so if you’re interested in riding on the road, please let me know.

Both of our children, Amanda and Andrew, attended SBMS and went through Rites of Passage as ninth graders. Andrew attended Lewis and Clark College as a Dean’s Scholar and has a degree in Environmental Studies with an emphasis in conservation biology. Last year, he taught at the School Down Under in New Zealand. Currently, he works as a environmental analyst in Santa Barbara at AMEC, an international company. Amanda, who was a Regent’s Scholar as an undergraduate at UCLA, has recently returned from Tanzania where she worked with CHAI and researched ways to market more effective malarial drugs. She is currently a 2nd-year grad student in the new Global Studies department at UCSB.

Although I was born in Virginia, and have strong family ties to North Carolina, Santa Barbara is really my home. My family moved to Santa Barbara when I was 13 years old and since then I have attended SB Jr High, SBHS, SBCC and UCSB. I’ve worked at SBMS for over 12 years now. I love math and computers and the Aubrey/ Maturin series, a wonderful set of sea-faring books written by Patrick O’Brian.
