Wren Sumerel

Hi, My name is Wren. I am the sixth and seventh grade Spanish teacher and help coach the surf team. I have lived in the area since seventh grade when my family moved from North Carolina and I am one of the few teachers who did not attend school at SBMS. I spent my middle school and high school years in Goleta where I attended Goleta Valley Junior High and Dos Pueblos.

I attended UCSB for college where I majored in Spanish and Global Studies. During college, I studied abroad in Chile and fell in love with traveling, speaking Spanish, and learning about the rich cultures that our world has to offer. I also loved living in a country where I could surf perfect waves one day and be in the Andes snowboarding the next day. The empanadas were also delicious.

After graduating from UCSB in 2008, I took two years to travel and live in Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, and Indonesia. In Costa Rica, I worked on a community service project building a school and surf instruction with different groups of students. In the Dominican Republic, I did a lot of kiteboarding, worked at a restaurant to improve my Spanish, and taught surf lessons. These experiences provided an opportunity for me to share my passion of surfing with others, watch teenagers push their limits, and broaden my Spanish vocabulary.

Upon my return to Santa Barbara, I decided to become a Spanish teacher and pursue a Masters in Education at UCSB. I love working with pre-teens and teens in and outside of the classroom and being part of their discovery of healthy hobbies and passions. In my free time I enjoy kiteboarding, surfing, hiking, running, and doing anything outside.
