Athletics & Creative Arts
At Santa Barbara Middle School, we believe that a complete middle school education requires a curriculum that addresses the creative side of the adolescent mind. From digital arts and drama to flag football and yoga, SBMS offers a comprehensive selection of electives allowing our students to engage in creative growth and physical development. Nearly 100% of SBMS graduates who apply to the art and multi-media academies at local high schools are accepted.
Of special note are the performing arts classes and productions. The SBMS drama department is unmatched at any junior high school, independent or public. Its quality and achievements are well-known throughout the community. Its productions include:
Play Production: Such as Oliver, The Wizard of Oz, West Side Story as well as original plays and musicals one production each year.
Drama Scenes: Three performances each year.
Summer Stock: This program produces two plays each summer for ages five and up.
Our emphasis in sports is on participation, so all students who want to play are placed on a team no tryouts. We have teams in volleyball, soccer, and basketball as well as electives in archery, lacrosse, ultimate frisbee, and flag football.
Electives vary each trimester, and have included in addition to the sports and performances listed above: choral & instrumental music, creative arts, flash animation, digital arts, digital video & movies, web design, garden, photography, bicycle mechanics, independent sports, hiking, mountain biking, ocean sports, golf, and tennis.
