Day 2: The 9th Graders continued with their mission to serve and learn by transporting donated clothing, diapers and $2500 worth of Similac (donated by a Similac rep) to the women's shelter, then breaking into groups to entertain the children, repair walls and doors, plant flowering shrubs bought at the local market, and repaint large portions of the outside of the house. Another group went downtown to the market to purchase fresh vegetables, beans, rice and other staples for the shelter. The day ended back at the orphanage, again playing with the kids before handing out 70 personalized backpacks filled with school supplies, stuffed animals, candy and toiletries. Needless to say, these were enthusiastically received, as were two guitars and two heaters for the house. The evening was brought to a tumultuously enthusiastic close with a slideshow of all the kids from SBMS and COA taken throughout our visit.

Day 1: Arriving at school at 7 AM didn't dampen any spirits, nor did the 250 mile journey to Tijuana. We arrived to smiles and warm hugs, and proceded upwards from there. Shared games, crafts and a meal were topped off by a spontaneous community sing-along and cross-cultural performances. It was a day of joy in the shadow of loss...where the joy intensely outshined, and memories were etched in both groups.
Tomorrow will bring more.
