The purpose of the Life Skills program is to provide a productive and comfortable atmosphere, and for students to develop personal values and to discuss relevant social issues. Periodically we invite professionals and those with related experience to speak about topics covered in the curriculum. Through guest speakers, videos, individual exercises, and role plays, the students become more knowledgeable about community resources and are better able to make educated and responsible choices for the future. The class philosophy believes that self-esteem, parent communication, and media literacy are crucial to the process of developing positive decision- making skills. We strive to incorporate this knowledge into a powerful foundation for our students as we include exercises, which facilitate discussions and promote a healthy self-image. The goal is to provide students with a more factual and in depth knowledge about the issues facing them and to aid them with the transition into adulthood. The goal is for each student to complete this class with a better understanding of their bodies and minds, their decisions and the effects, and their parents and individual family’s values. Curriculum topics include: A.I.D.S. education, communication skills, community services and resources, decision making and values, relationships: family and friends, self-esteem , sex education and family planning, substance abuse and prevention, and suicide prevention. Students earn high school credit for Family Health. |
