Physical Science 6

Students will learn physical concepts of forces, the four types of forces in nature and their characteristics, , Newton’s laws of motions and their applications, friction, and fluid dynamics such as buoyancy and pressure and their applications. Students will also learn about the properties and physical and chemical characteristics of matter, what molecules and compounds are,, the structure of the atom and development of the atomic theory. Students will also learn how to read and use the Periodic Table of Elements as a tool for understanding chemistry. All of this will be tied in to geology where students learn that all of Earth¹s geographical features and processes occur because of dynamic processes explained mostly by the theory of plate tectonics. Students study the three major rock types and the rock cycle, basic stratigraphic techniques, volcanoes and their hazards and benefits, and that bodies of water are dynamic systems that transport sediment and give, for example, California, its distinctive landscape. Students use the scientific process to develop a hypothesis, conduct experiments, collect data, interpret the data, and communicate their findings to the class.
