Social Studies 6 & 7

Students will learn the latest tools of communication and observation available. In the fall they will study our system of government and gain an intimate knowledge of the preamble of the constitution of these United States. They will hold elections at the same time our nation does. And after the ballots are counted, they will hold their own judicial proceedings. They will need all those understandings before you join what some say to be America’s most noble expedition. Students will head west with Lewis, Clark, Seaman, York, Sacagawea, and two corps of adventurers: the Corps of Discovery and the Corps of ReDiscovery. They will collect, draw, take pictures, make movies, and record music and voices. Like Lewis & Clark and the Corps, they will make detailed observations of the country, crops, animals, and weather; meet the “Indians” and record their languages, populations, religions, and customs, recording and illustrating their discoveries on their “lap desks.”

When it is possible, students will send back samples of collections and foods and clothing they find interesting. We will have weekly electronic journal recollections of discoveries democratic and beyond along with classroom reenactments of discoveries artistic, culinary, scientific, and geographic. It is expected that with orders from Jefferson, each member of this band of discoverers will find something that awakens some passion in them about the country in which they were born. So moved, artists will create works of awe; cooks will note newfound recipes and ingredients; writers will wax profound; musicians will record and compose; dancers will dance; scientists will scratch; inventers will invent; and travelers will get lost. If everyone does their part, we should all return from our journey rightfully proud of the possibilities of this place called America.
