Spanish 8 follows national standards and expands on the introduction to the Spanish language and to Spanish and Latin American cultures the students received in seventh grade. Spanish 8 is a high school level course. Students will receive one year of high school foreign language credit for two years of study in foreign language (seventh and eighth grade). Through communication-based lessons, students develop second language skills and build the confidence necessary to use their knowledge. The overall goal is to learn to communicate in a culturally-appropriate manner in a fun, creative, and focused atmosphere. The class is based on the communicative approach, which gives students the opportunity to interact in Spanish among themselves and their teacher. The principle objectives are to develop skills in the speaking, reading, and writing of Spanish and to develop a heightened awareness for other cultures at home and abroad. The study and practice of grammar will occur inside and outside of the classroom. During class time students will engage in role-playing, projects, paired work, singing, group work, listening activities as well as note taking and lecture. Students will also learn reading and writing strategies, test taking strategies, and how to improve pronunciation.
