The electives program at SBMS provides students with an array of opportunities to explore diverse subjects, broadly falling within the categories of Arts and Sports. Electives are offered by teachers in areas of their expertise and passion, and their enthusiasm is infectious. Available electives change each trimester, keeping choices varied, although some classes continue to build on the skills of earlier sessions, and/or change to reflect the appropriate sport season. Even though students are required to take at least one Art and one Sport each trimester, they are free to make the choices of subjects themselves*.
Electives are offered in two formats, Monday-Thursday electives, of which there are three 40 minute class sessions daily (sixth, seventh and eighth periods), and Friday electives, which are extended periods running from one and a half to three hours on Friday afternoons, many of which are held off-campus (e.g, Mountain Biking, Tennis and Ocean Sports).
*In some cases, students are required to take a Homework Lab or Study Skills class, and this year, 9th Grade Life Skills is scheduled during the afternoon elective period.
