Backpacking Equipment List - Follow Precisely
Everything listed below is REQUIRED unless it is labeled "Optional".
Everything you bring must fit into your backpack. This is a VERY precise list, follow it exactly.
You and your tenting partner/s will share carrying your tent. Split the weight between you.
oExternal (5 lbs) or Internal (7 lbs) Frame Backpack with well padded hip & shoulder pads. (Backpacks may be purchased from SBMS (if ordered ahead) or rented for $25.00 in Whit's Warehouse)

Packing Instructions: PACK LIGHT. EVERY OUNCE COUNTS.
Your body will thank you.
Take what is listed here, and NOTHING more.
We will check and weigh. Pack efficiently.
Your pack must weigh approximately 1/3 of your body weight, no more.
Be prepared for rain, cold, and bring all of the food you'll need, no more; food is heavy.
Count on 1 1/4 pound per day.
You’ll find that you eat small breakfasts, snacks, lunches and BIG dinners.
oLeave your watch at home – we’ll go by our body clocks!
oLeave your cell phone at home.
WW = Whit's Warehouse (SBMS trip equipment store) carries these items for your convenience.
For Torso and Legs: To stay warm, dress in LAYERS:
(All listed weights follow. Weight is important - EVERY OUNCE COUNTS.)
For Torso: DO NOT bring Cotton. Cotton makes you cold when it gets wet. “Cotton Kills”
Shirts: ALL polypropylene, polyester, nylon or capilene. (WW)
o1 long sleeved shirt (long underwear top) for layering – must be synthetic, not cotton.
(synthetic: nylon, polyester, capilene, polypropylene) (8 oz each) (WW)
o1 long sleeved 100 weight fleece layer (12 oz.) (WW)
o2 short sleeve synthetic shirts - wear one, carry one. (WW)
oA Synthetic or Down Jacket (1 lb) (WW jacket is perfect)
OR: A WARM fleece (200 wt) (1.5 lbs) (WW) & A Synthetic or Down Vest (12 oz)
oA water-proofed shell with hood. (SBMS Rain Gear Jacket) (1 pound) (WW)
For Legs: DO NOT bring Cotton.
o2 pair nylon undies (wear one, carry one) 2 bras for girls
o1 pair nylon, quick-dry shorts (wash on layover days)
o1 pair of polypropylene, capilene or silk long-johns (8 oz) (WW)
o1 pair tech seat pants (100 weight fleece layer long johns) (14 oz.) (WW)
o1 pair of quick-dry long pants (Light weight, nylon – Gramicci style) (6-16 oz) (WW)
o1 pair water-proofed rain pants (SBMS Rain Gear Pants) (12 oz.) (WW)
For Feet: DO NOT bring Cotton socks.
o1 pair hiking shoes (well worn in) (Some used shoes available at WW - come check)
o1 pair of wool camp socks (2 oz) (WW)
o2 pair thick hiking socks (Smart Wool ‘Trekking’ recommended) (WW)
o1 lightweight camp shoes or sandals (Example: light weight slip on sandals)

o2 heavy zip lock bags to put over socks in the mornings to keep socks dry.
For Extremities:
oWARM gloves or mittens (Wool or fleece) (2 oz) (WW)
oWARM cap (Wool or fleece) (2 oz) (WW)
oSun Hat (wear while hiking to prevent sunburn) (WW)
oBandana: When dry it keeps you warm, When wet, it cools you down. (WW)
oBalaclava/Neck Gator (fleece) (WW)
Sleeping bag, Sleeping Pad, Tent, (poles, stakes, tie-down chord) Ground cloth:
o1-3 person water-proofed Tent. Name. Share weight w/ partner. (4 lbs each max) (WW)
oAll Poles, Stakes & Tie-Down chord.
oWARM Sleeping bag in stuff sack. (0 degree rating) (4 lbs. maximum)
oSleeping Pad (Name). Insulates sleeper from the cold ground. (1 lb, 10 oz) (WW)
oGround Cloth: Must not stick out from under the tent. (Name) (WW)
oCompression Straps: For attaching tent, sleeping bag and sleep pad on pack frame. (WW)
(do not use Bungie Cords - they snap off and whack people.)
o(Optional – Compression stuff sack to make sleeping bag as small as possible.) (WW)
Miscellaneous:
oSmall flashlight (WW Headlamp is the best) (Name)
o1 Extra set of batteries for your Headlamp (8 oz)
o2 small Kleenex packets for Toilet Paper. (WW)
oToothbrush (tiny size) & tiny travel Toothpaste (opt.– can get along w/o toothpaste)
oComb or tiny Brush
oPack Towel – lightweight, chamois-type towel (4 oz) (WW)
o6 quarters for showers
o1 packet of No-Rinse body wipes. (WW)
oDeodorant - smallest possible size – but important!
oStocked Personal First Aid Kit (includes tiny sun screen) (WW)
oChap Stick (Lip Protector) (WW)
oWhistle (WW)
oInsect Repellent (small container)
oAnti itching ointment (small container) for insect bites or poison oak
oAny personal medications (tell trip teacher.)
oSun Glasses and strap (Name)
oPen & Paper for journaling at quiet time
oTrowel (5.00 refundable deposit from SBMS office) (2 oz.)
oSomething of yourself to share with the group.
Do NOT bring a pillow – Your jacket can be put in a Stuff Sack for a pillow.
Cooking and Eating Equipment and Food.
oEach student will be in a cook group of 1, 2 or 3 - their choice.
oSpoon & fork with water-proofed name on it (Use nail polish or waterproofed ink) (WW)
oBowl and cup with water-proofed name on each (Use nail polish) (12 oz total) (WW)
oPut lightweight eating equipment in a separate stuff sack with your name on it. (WW)
oLightweight containers for 2 quarts of water - listed above with backpack (2 oz.) (WW)
When it's your turn to cook the dinner, be SURE you have ENOUGH food to FILL everyone's tummies in your 2-3 person cook group. This is your personal responsibility.
We suggest all dinners in one Stuff Sack, all breakfasts in 1 SS, and all snacks + lunches in 1 SS.
The following items must be divided among the students in the group:
oLight weight backpacking stove (to share with cook group.) (10 oz) (Will be supplied)
oFuel for stove. (We will pick up our fuel ON Catalina Island.)
o1 Light weight 1.5 qt pot with lid - per cook group of 1-3 students. (10 oz) (WW)
oTiny lighter for stove lighting (we suggest: mini bic)
o1/2 scrubbie
oBiodegradable liquid soap for dishes, clothes and shampoo.
- Dr. Bronners (WW) or Camp Suds - should be carried in a tiny container.
oNylon cord for hanging food at night. (WW) (only need 20 feet – cut and burn edges.)
oAll of your breakfasts, lunches and snacks. (Total food weight of: 1 1/4 pounds per day.)
oThe dinner (or dinners) you will be responsible for cooking for your cook group.

oCamera (the most light weight)
oTiny sewing/repair kit for tent and Thermarest pads (WW)
o1 pkt of extra tent stakes and tie down chord (WW)
oA swim suit for bathing in outside showers
Plastic Bags:
o2 Freezer Zip-lock bags for trash carry out. Store with lunch food.
oX-large Hefty bag to cover back pack each night. (It WILL be wet, dewey every night)
oOne plastic bag to cover sleeping bag in case of rain. (ALWAYS count on rain!)
(You can store this INSIDE sleeping bag stuff sack as a liner.)
