Career Study Week Letter Home:
“You know more of a road by having traveled it than by all the conjectures and descriptions in the world.” -William Hazlitt

Dear Sixth Grade Students and Parents,                                          11/05/09

The Santa Barbara Middle School prides itself in practicing experiential education in all four sides of the diamond: Academics, Outdoor Education, Creative Arts/Sports, and Community. As Thanksgiving nears, we change gears to our Community side with Career Study Week and conferences.  The seventh and eighth grade students will be placed in jobs.  The ninth grade will be doing community service for various non-profit organizations.  As for the sixth grade, I have planned a very exciting and educational introduction to the work and community service worlds.

During our time together, the students will be participating in four days of career and service-oriented activities. We will spend a day exploring jobs in entertainment by viewing Santa Barbara High School’s latest theater production and interviewing the director, Otto Layman. We will also meet Ted Rhodes, a retired behind-the-scenes moviemaker, and learn about his film “Electric Shadow.” Later in the week, we’ll “Take a Walk in Their Wheels” when we experience first-hand what it would be like to be disabled. We will also learn about service work and have some on-the-job disaster training at the American Red Cross for a day. Last but not least, we will visit the harbor to learn about marine related careers. Hopefully we’ll also have some fun getting to know each other better as we explore new opportunities and broaden our perspectives on the world of careers and service!

The dates of this year’s Career Study Week are November 19th, 20th, 23rd, and 24th. Each day will start at 9:00 am and end at 1:00 pm. Please send your student with a snack and lunch each day. I will be emailing you the URL for the website 6th Grade Career Study program, which will be updated on a regular basis. During the Career Study Week, please be sure to check the website for any new information pertaining to the next day’s events. Please continue to use Garden Street as the pick-up and drop-off area. Since teachers are in conferences, please make arrangements to have your student picked up at 1 pm.

The Student- Parent-Teacher Conferences and Career Study Week will be taking place simultaneously. If your child’s conference coincides with a field trip you will need to determine where your student will be and arrange a pick-up and drop-off location with me. There will be more information on locations, driving directions, times, and conferences on the Career Study website. I am happy to help you coordinate any of this. If you need to contact me, please call the SBMS office or send me an e-mail at: kira.brady@gmail.com

Sixth Graders, come prepared with a “sense of wonder” as we begin to learn more about the endless possibilities of the jobs and service opportunities that are available to you!
Let’s go build some bridges!

Sincerely,
	Kira Brady
	SBMS Career Study Week Coordinator
