SBMS in the Community
A Day of Holiday Giving

On the day before we all headed out to enjoy our own winter holiday celebrations, SBMS students were involved in our first annual “Day of Holiday Giving” where we truly demonstrated our SBMS mission by generously giving back to our own Santa Barbara community. We continue to strive to be a “private school with a public purpose.”

Throughout the morning you could see various groups of students totally engaged – head and heart -- in real community service. Some students chose to create New Year’s cards, complete with personalized messages, for the troops in Afghanistan; while others joined Maureen and her band of singing minstrels and sang holiday carols at our local retirement homes. A group of students were eagerly loaded into SBMS vans and zipped off to a local Goleta orchard to pick and bag fresh tangerines. Then the students personally delivered the fresh produce to the Rescue Mission of Santa Barbara and the Food Bank.

Some of students created centerpieces for the Veteran’s Memorial luncheon, while others thoughtfully put together “Necessity Bags” (everything from toothbrushes and combs to warm socks and mittens) for the residents at Casa Esperanza. Our Bike Monkeys were busy tuning up donated bikes that we had collected and were then delivered to the Boys and Girls Club of Santa Barbara to eventually delight some unsuspecting boy or girl on Christmas morning.

Holiday music filled the halls and the feeling of good will spread through every SBMS student knowing they were part of something bigger than themselves on our first annual “Day of Holiday Giving.”
