About Career Studies Week
From its earliest days, Santa Barbara Middle School has embraced the philosophy that learning happens everywhere. When the school first introduced in-person Parent/Student/Teacher Conferences, a question arose: What do we do with the students all week? The answer became a defining SBMS tradition—Career Studies Week.
A visionary program ahead of its time, Career Studies Week immerses students in hands-on experiences throughout the Santa Barbara community, expanding their horizons and deepening their understanding of real-world opportunities. Each year, the program grows with them:
- 6th & 7th Grade – Students participate in a weeklong Career Studies Program, exploring various industries and professions through interactive experiences.
- 8th Grade – Students take on real-world Work Internships, gaining firsthand insight into different career paths.
- 9th Grade – The journey culminates in launching their Community Service Program, a commitment that extends throughout the year, fostering leadership and civic engagement.
By stepping beyond the classroom and into workplaces, studios, labs, and service organizations, SBMS students connect learning to life—developing independence, curiosity, and a sense of purpose that will guide them for years to come.
