Why is Food at SBMS so Important?

Food is more than just sustenance—it is a reflection of culture, a connection to the environment, a catalyst for political discourse, an avenue for economic opportunity, and a cornerstone of engaged citizenship. By developing a thoughtful relationship with food, our students gain a deeper understanding of the interconnected world it shapes. Through this lens, they cultivate awareness, responsibility, and a stronger sense of identity as global citizens.

Honest Food Policy

Rooted in Quality. Nourishing Community. Designed for All.

At SBMS, food is more than fuel—it’s a shared experience, a conversation, and a connection. Our Honest Food Policy guides every meal served on campus and every bite eaten on expeditions. It is a commitment to high-quality nourishment, inclusivity, and community-building.

From humble beginnings in the soil, to the fire that transforms, and finally to the plates we gather around—food is a deeply human experience. At SBMS, we honor that experience by coming together around the table. We believe that what matters most isn’t just what’s on the plate, but the story behind it and the memories created after.

Our “Honest Food” approach means striving for the best ingredients, prepared with care and purpose. We choose mindfully—supporting local and ethical sources whenever possible. We ensure that everyone feels welcome at the table, with meals that reflect a range of needs and preferences. And we build community—bite by bite, meal by meal—knowing that shared food fosters shared understanding.

As Director of the Food Program, I invite every family to support this vision. Together, we can nourish more than bodies—we can nourish belonging.
