Leading From Behind

Since 1980, the SBMS Bike Program has been at the heart of the school’s culture, beginning with a pioneering group of students (originally all girls but now open to everyone) who were trained in bicycle repair and tasked with assisting their peers. Today, Bike Program students do much more than fix bikes; they are true leaders within the school community.

Leadership in the Bike Program is built on service. Students take on essential roles, from repairing flats and broken chains to loading and unloading bikes for trips and hauling tools and supplies. But their impact extends beyond mechanics—they offer encouragement and support to fellow students, whether during a grueling climb or on a cold, rainy ride.

Bike Program students are not just participants; they are the foundation of SBMS Outdoor Education. What began as a small group of eight has grown into a dedicated team of around 30 students each year. Their commitment to service, leadership, and community is what makes the program thrive.

Becoming a Bike Program leader is both an honor and a responsibility. Students must complete a rigorous training program and be evaluated by a panel of teachers before earning their place. The program is led by teacher and alum Jesse Kasehagen, along with alum parent Bruce Davis. Each year, students elect a Captain or Co-Captains from within their ranks, ensuring that leadership continues to grow from within.
