Brian McWilliams

Head of School / World History, 9th Grade

Head of School / World History, 9th Grade

Having grown up in Santa Barbara, I graduated from Dunn School in 1984 before heading to Lewis and Clark College in Oregon to earn a degree in International Relations with a minor in History. I began working at SBMS in 1997 as a rookie teacher helping Headmaster Kent Ferguson with his World History class, coaching volleyball and surfing, and leading trips. After twelve years of teaching at SBMS, I was asked to become Head of School in 2009. As I approach my twenty-sixth year at SBMS I am looking forward to continuing our exploration of this age as a teacher and Head of School, but I am also thrilled to be continuing as a second-time parent and watching my son, Kellan, on his middle school journey.

With gratitude, wonder and excitement,
Brian

Assistant Head of School

Assistant Head of School

I was born and raised in Santa Barbara and attended Marymount School (now Riviera Ridge) before graduating from Santa Barbara High School. I then studied Human Biology with a focus on Gender Issues at Stanford University.

After college, I joined Teach for America in Los Angeles, where I earned my Master’s Degree in Education from Loyola Marymount University. I was honored to receive a Fund for Teachers fellowship, which allowed me to study the habitats of manatees and dolphins in Belize.

My teaching journey has taken me across the globe. After teaching in Los Angeles and San Francisco, I moved abroad to teach in Thailand and Mexico before joining The Columbus School in Medellín, Colombia. There, I transitioned into leadership roles as an instructional coach and later as middle school vice-principal. It was in Colombia that I discovered my passion for outdoor education, leading students on expeditions to the Colombian desert.

After nine years abroad, my husband (also a Santa Barbara native), our two children, and I decided to return home. I was fortunate to find the incredible community at SBMS, where I have been for the past seven years. Over my 20+ year career, I’ve taught in public, charter, and independent schools across Los Angeles, San Francisco, Thailand, Mexico, and Colombia.

When I’m not working, you can find me reading, traveling the world, taking Hip Hop classes, or shuttling my kids to soccer and dance!

Spanish, 9th Grade

Spanish, 9th Grade

With 23 years of experience teaching Spanish at various levels, I’m excited to help SBMS students achieve their language goals while fostering a deeper appreciation for the diverse cultures of the Spanish-speaking world.

Outside of the classroom, I’m an avid outdoor enthusiast—whether it’s exploring nature or incorporating outdoor experiences into my teaching. I’m passionate about trail running, often in the stunning Santa Barbara mountains, and I’ve completed several ultra-marathons, including a challenging 100-mile race.

I’m looking forward to the many trips, excursions, and ocean swims that are part of the SBMS experience, and I can’t wait to share those adventures with our community.

Social Studies, Grade 6

I teach 6th grade history and love bringing the past to life for my students!

Originally from Massachusetts, I’ve called California home for the past six years. I earned my B.A. in Geography and History from Humboldt State University in 2020 and recently completed my M.Ed at UCSB.

Outside the classroom, I have a passion for the outdoors and have worked as a backpacking instructor in New Hampshire. I love hiking, crafting, dancing, and practicing archery—anything that keeps me moving and exploring!

Counselor and Life Skills Teacher

Counselor and Life Skills Teacher

I’m honored to serve as the Counselor and Life Skills Teacher here at SBMS—a role that combines my passions for social-emotional learning, community building, and supporting young people through life’s big (and small) moments.

Originally from the Bay Area, I earned my BA in Global Studies from UCSB and my MA in Education and School Counseling from SJSU. While California is home, I’ve had the joy of living in seven countries—traveling the world, learning deeply about myself and others, and embracing adventure wherever it appears. I like to say I’m always racing my age to outnumber it with countries visited.

Outside of school, I find inspiration and joy in cycling, ocean swims, and epic adventures—like biking across the U.S. or canoeing the Mississippi River from source to sea. I love spending time in nature, reading, and connecting with people about what lights them up.

Returning to Santa Barbara and joining this extraordinary SBMS community has been a full-circle moment—and I’m also thrilled to be back coaching with the Santa Barbara Special Olympics, where I get to work alongside some of my favorite humans.

Admin & Information Technology

Admin & Information Technology

You can usually find me in the school office in the afternoons, working away on the computer or answering phones. I’ve been lucky enough to call SBMS my professional home since 1995, and I still love what I do—especially when it involves math, computers, and connecting with our incredible school community.

My husband and I have lived in Santa Barbara for over 50 years, and we’ve raised two children who both attended SBMS and experienced their Rites of Passage as ninth graders.

Our son, Andrew, attended Lewis & Clark College as a Dean’s Scholar and earned his MS from King’s College London in Environmental Modeling & Management. He now works at Rocky Mountain Institute. Our daughter, Amanda, was a Regent’s Scholar at UCLA and earned her MA in Global Studies at UCSB through a Central Fellowship. She currently serves as the Senior VP of Social Impact at Participant Media in Beverly Hills.

One of my greatest passions (next to spending time with our three amazing granddaughters) is road cycling. If you're ever up for a ride on two skinny tires, let me know—I’m always looking for a cycling buddy!

Though I was born in Virginia and have deep roots in North Carolina, Santa Barbara is truly home. I moved here at age 13 and have since attended SB Junior High, SBHS, SBCC, and UCSB. It’s been a full-circle journey, and I’m grateful every day to be part of the SBMS story.

English, 8th Grade

English, 8th Grade

I teach 8th Grade English and feel incredibly excited and honored to be part of the SBMS community. I earned my Master’s in Education in 2016 and have been teaching English for the past seven years. Before stepping into the classroom, I spent time traveling, cooking, hiking, and tutoring—experiences that still shape the way I connect with students and bring creativity into my teaching.

I love working with middle schoolers—their curiosity, humor, and fresh perspectives inspire me every day. One of my greatest joys is helping students find their voice and learn how to tell their stories with confidence. Whether through literature, poetry, or nonfiction, I believe English is a powerful lens for exploring the world and ourselves.

Outside of the classroom, you can usually find me reading on the beach, biking around town, cooking something delicious, playing guitar, traveling, chasing a pickleball, or spending quality time with my amazing nieces and nephew. I’m thrilled to be here and can’t wait to grow, learn, and share stories together at SBMS

Assistant to Head of School / Tuition Assistance Coordinator / Registrar

Class of 1981

I'm a fifth-generation Santa Barbaran and a proud member of the SBMS Class of ’81. SBMS runs deep in my family—my brother Robin, my son Asher, and my niece Aria all attended, and my mother, Carolyn, served on one of the school’s very first Board of Trustees committees. My husband, Will Fredericks, also works at SBMS—we’ve been together for nearly 11 years and recently tied the knot, so we’re newlyweds too!

My educational journey took me through SBCC, San Diego State, and UCSB. Along the way, I earned my nursing degree, worked as a bookkeeper, and founded and operated medical distribution companies. I found my way back to SBMS when Asher started 7th grade, initially volunteering as the Parent Association Chair. Every year since then, I’ve found a little more to do—and a little more to love.

I still remember when Margot Kenly, then Head of School, asked me to watch the front office while she ran an errand. I'm not sure I ever saw her return, because all these years later, you can still find me there, watching over the front. I truly love being part of this community and witnessing the joy and magic that fills these halls—it fills my heart every day.

Coach and Trip Staff

Coach and Trip Staff

I coach basketball, volleyball, and football at SBMS. I also teach electives while being part of the outdoor education trip staff.

Born and raised in Santa Barbara, I earned my BS in Kinesiology with a focus on Sports Psychology and Coaching, followed by an MA in Sports Management from CSU Long Beach.

For the past decade, I’ve dedicated myself to improving the world of youth sports—from helping student-athletes transition from college to the pros, to building after-school programs that encourage movement and connection, to hosting basketball events that uplift inner-city communities. I’ve also spent countless hours volunteering at local parks and rec centers, sharing my experience and passion for the game.

My true calling emerged through this journey—working with kids. I founded my own youth development program in Los Angeles, where I aimed to make a lasting impact on young people both on and off the court. Whether it’s private training, clinics, summer camps, or sports-themed birthday parties, my goal is always to inspire kids to “B Active, B Confident, B Happy.”

When I’m not coaching or in the classroom, you’ll likely find me exploring backcountry trails, playing beach volleyball, paddling in the ocean, or practicing yoga on the mat.

Trip Staff / Bike Program / Warehouse

I work in the outdoor education program as Trip Staff, and also work with the Bike Monkey Program. I joined the staff here in 2004, one year after my son Kevin started attending SBMS as a 6th grader. My daughter Amy became a 6th grader here in 2006, so I had the privilege of watching them both grow as they attended this school.

I also own Hazard’s Cyclesport, so I am able to work with students at my shop during the school’s Career Studies program during the fall. My own kids benefitted greatly from their time at SBMS, so I really enjoy being able to help the current students as they journey down the path of middle school.

Librarian

Librarian

A Santa Barbara native, I’m thrilled to now be part of the SBMS community as the school librarian. After spending the past 20 years living in places like Northern California, Florida, and most recently Northern Spain—where I deepened my love for Spanish food and culture—it's wonderful to be back home.

I hold a PhD in English Literature, with a focus on women authors, travel writing, and food studies—topics I’m always excited to talk about. Whether I’m curating the shelves, helping students discover their next favorite book, or supporting research projects, I love creating a welcoming and inspiring space in the library.

When I’m not surrounded by books, you’ll find me enjoying the outdoors, cooking or sharing meals with friends, exploring new places, or spending time with my family. Please stop by the library and say hello—I'd love to connect!

I assist David Teton-Landis in the tech department. I help integrate technology into the classroom, support teachers and students with tech needs, teach electives, and enjoy the trips with the students.

I started working at SBMS in the fall of 2016. My son, Brendan also started as a 7th grader in 2016. From 2010 to 2016 I ran the STEM lab at Washington Elementary School where I taught programming with Scratch, 3D printing and design, Lego robotics, and basic computer skills. In addition, I have worked as a Natural History guide in the adventure travel industry for 20+ years, leading expeditions to remote destinations around the world. In addition, I have also worked as a professional photographer and bike tour guide.

Music Electives

Music Electives

My passion is building confidence by teaching music as joy and sharing, rather than competition and comparison. I am excited to return to SBMS to teach music and coach sports.

In the early 1990s, I worked at SBMS as an Athletic Director and Spanish teacher. Before that I did the same for John Seigel Boettner at Dunn School. I also taught at Cate School for 4 years. I have stayed connected to SBMS by helping out with Songfest, the school's annual music festival. Because I have been fortunate to be Whitney Ingersoll and Marco Andrade's first referral music tutor, I have taught generations of SBMS students guitar, bass, vocals, and performance through my own business and at Jensen Music. I have coached volleyball and basketball at Laguna Blanca Middle School for the past 7 years. I was selected by the Santa Barbara Blues Society to teach a “Blues in the Schools” program. I have a B.A. in Journalism from San Diego State, and I studied education there and at UCSB.

For the last 40 years, I have played music in town, surfed, and played beach volleyball.

Math, 6th and 7th grades

After ten wonderful years with the Goleta Union School District—as a certified tutor, Learning Center teacher, and most recently, a sixth-grade classroom teacher—I’m thrilled to be joining the SBMS community and the math team. Following my kids to this incredible school feels like a natural next chapter, and I’m excited to bring both my academic and life experiences into this vibrant environment.

Before becoming a teacher, I spent many years traveling and running small, local businesses—experiences that shaped my worldview and continue to inform how I approach education. I love creating meaningful learning opportunities that connect classroom concepts with real-life application. I’m also looking forward to sharing some of my outside-the-classroom passions through electives like mountain biking, soccer, yoga, and paddling.

It’s been an incredible privilege to teach at the same school my children attended, and I’m grateful that will continue here at SBMS. With the added bonus of being married to an SBMS alum, this school already feels like home. I can’t wait to get to know more of the students, staff, and families as we begin this next adventure together.

Director of Communications

I joined Santa Barbara Middle School in 2022 as the Communications Director and am proud to be part of the Development team alongside Jenni-Elise and Harmony.

I’ve been living and working internationally since 2008. I earned my master’s degree in Integrated Strategic Marketing from London Metropolitan University in 2014. Prior to SBMS, I served as the Director of Marketing and Communications at Mont'Kiara International School in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Our journey to the United States has been an adventure with too many stories to share in a short introduction!

I have a son, Dylan, who is a passionate LA Lakers fan and would happily spend every moment on the basketball court. I grew up playing rugby and still enjoy jumping into a game whenever I get the chance. As a family, we love to travel the world, connect with new cultures, and make new friends. We’re excited to continue that journey here in Santa Barbara.

Dir. of Educational Technology / Digital Arts / Teen Press / AV Production

Hi--Digital Dave, here. Welcome to Santa Barbara Middle School!

Here at SBMS I help integrate technology in the classroom, teach digital media classes, do tech support, teach Teen Press, and--my favorite thing now—create films for and about the school. I also hike, bike, surf, tent and slog…on SBMS expeditions!

I started on Staff in 2005, began teaching electives the next year, and joined the full-time Faculty in 2007. I have one son, Jacob, who graduated with the Class of 2006. My academic background is in psychology (BA & MA) and dance (MFA). I worked for the Navy as a researcher in the early days of computer-assisted learning, and I was a professional dancer in New York (and Belgium) in the 1980s with the Mark Morris Dance Group. “Retiring” to Hawai’i, I began working in digital media, employed by Tom Coffman Multimedia before forming my own company, LUMINOUS Interactive Digital Media, which I ran until I joined SBMS.

Physics, 9th Grade / Science, 6th Grade

I teach 6th grade Earth Science and 9th grade Physics at SBMS, where I have the privilege of helping students explore the natural world through curiosity, experimentation, and hands-on learning. A proud Santa Barbara native, I hold a BA in Environmental Science and an M.Ed from Colorado College.

Over the past eight years, I’ve taught in both California and Colorado, but it was in the mountains of Colorado where I truly fell in love with outdoor adventure. That passion continues to shape the way I connect with students and bring science to life.

Outside the classroom, I’m most at home on the road in my camper van, chasing powder on skis, climbing up rock faces, or getting my hands dirty at the pottery wheel. I also play drums in a local band called The Cherry Bomz and love picking funky bluegrass licks on the guitar whenever I get the chance.

Whether it’s in nature or the classroom, I believe in learning by doing—and doing with joy.

Drama / Art / Video / Music / Afterschool Theater

For over 30 years, I’ve called Santa Barbara Middle School home—a place where imagination takes center stage and creativity is a way of life. Alongside my partner in art and life, Maureen Lehman, I’ve had the joy of producing a musical every spring with our incredible students. It’s a labor of love that continues to inspire me year after year.

I teach a class called Folk Art, where we breathe new life into found materials. “One person’s trash is another’s treasure” isn’t just a saying—it’s the heartbeat of our process. I also lead a Movie Making class, drawing from decades of experience in video and editing that began back in the late ’70s, when consumer video cameras first emerged and the magic of moving pictures became accessible.

My journey working with young people began in 1973 at the Montessori Center School and the Free School. When the Open Alternative School launched, I was there too—building programs rooted in art, theater, and self-expression. Since then, I’ve woven myself into the creative fabric of Santa Barbara’s educational scene, always with an eye toward sparking originality and passion in the next generation.

A lifetime of exploring the intersection of folk art, performance, and video has led me to develop my own techniques and vision—many of which are shared on my website, thecardboardking.com, a home for my cardboard creations and artistic experiments.

Maureen and I have also co-founded and run Santa Barbara Summer Stock, a summer theater program that’s now been lighting up stages for 35 years. For us, art is a family affair, a community celebration, and a way of life.

Director of Outdoor Education / Warehouse

I am the SBMS Director of Outdoor Education. I started working at SBMS in 1997 as a rookie along with Brian McWilliams and Jesse Wooten, and almost 2 decades later, I still LOVE my job! One of my favorite places to be is out on a SBMS trip with this amazing community of faculty and students.

I attended SBMS for grade 7 through grade 9 as did both my brother and sister. From SBMS I went on to SB High School and then to the University of Washington for my undergraduate degree in Theater Arts. I also attended Seattle Massage School, and after a few years working in the healing arts world, I decided to get my Masters in Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine.

During my twenties, I traveled quite a bit, cycling across the US with my best friend from 7th grade and then around Europe for 3 months. I also had many shorter camping, backpacking, and overseas adventures. Those were very full and exciting years that shaped how I live my life now.

My professions are a mixed bag, but I love all the work I do.  In my free time, you will find me outdoors, usually with my son Malcolm, exploring the beaches and mountains, camping and traveling.

Math, 6th, & 7th / Trip Coordinator

I teach 7th grade math and serve as the End-of-the-Year Trip Coordinator for both 6th and 7th grades. I grew up just over the hill in Santa Ynez and first joined the SBMS community in 2005. After taking some time away to be with my children, I was thrilled to return to SBMS in 2015.

I earned a B.S. in Chemistry with a minor in Dance from Butler University, and later received a Master’s in International Education from the School for International Training in Vermont. For over a decade, I led student programs abroad—blending cultural exploration and outdoor education in countries such as Japan, Thailand, India, Bolivia, and New Zealand.

While still in graduate school, I co-founded Teachers on Bikes, an initiative that took me on a 100-day cycling journey through Central America and Mexico. Along the way, we connected NGOs and local schools with classrooms in the U.S.—in a pre-blogging era that made that kind of connection even more unique and impactful.

When I’m not in the classroom, you’ll likely find me traveling, hiking, biking, gardening, playing in the ocean, or just enjoying time with my family.

I’m excited to be entering my fourth year at SBMS, where I continue to support fundraising, admissions, communications, and the business office. My background includes five years working in development at the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Barbara and Hospice of Santa Barbara, and before that, I ran my own wedding and event videography business for over a decade. So if you see me around campus, I’m probably holding a camera—capturing the magic of everyday life at SBMS is one of my favorite parts of the job!

I’ve lived in Santa Barbara for over 20 years, though I grew up in Kauai, Alaska, and Guam. I earned my degree in Environmental Studies from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, and fun fact: both of my parents were middle school teachers, so you could say this age group runs in the family.

I’m also a proud SBMS parent—my daughter Luna joined as a 6th grader this year, and my son Grayden is already counting down the days until it’s his turn. We’re thrilled to be part of this vibrant, creative community.

Math, 8th & 9th Grade

I’ve been teaching mathematics and coaching sports at SBMS since 2004, though my connection to the school goes back even further—I was once a student here myself in the early '90s! My own Rites of Passage journey in 1993 left such a lasting impact that I couldn’t help but return to give back as a teacher.

After SBMS, I attended Cate School for high school and went on to Emory University in Atlanta, where I earned a B.A. in Psychology. My background, both as a student and educator, has given me a deep appreciation for the values SBMS instills in its students—resilience, curiosity, collaboration, and the confidence to take on challenges both in and out of the classroom.

I’m especially passionate about our outdoor programs and the way they help build character and connection. Whether it's on our bike trips or during daily games of volleyball or frisbee on the field, I love seeing students grow through movement and play.

In the classroom, it’s all about the numbers. I love math because it transcends language—it’s a universal tool. Whether I’m traveling abroad or teaching right here in Santa Barbara, numbers are a common thread. I’m grateful for every year I get to spend teaching math at SBMS and look forward to many more.

I'm incredibly excited to continue my journey with the SBMS community this year, teaching 8th and 9th grade math. I’m also involved in Friday electives and upper school trips, where I get to connect with students outside the classroom in meaningful and memorable ways.

I grew up in New Jersey and studied finance at the University of Michigan. I began my professional career in consulting, but it didn’t take long for me to realize that my true passion lies in teaching and working with young people. I earned my secondary math teaching certificate from Central Washington University while living in Seattle, where my teaching career officially began. After moving to Santa Barbara, I taught at Anacapa School and St. Raphael’s before joining SBMS in 2016.

Outside of school, I love spending time with my wife Susie and our kids, Maeve and Silas. We’re often out biking, hiking, or enjoying beach days together. I also enjoy playing music and a good game of ultimate frisbee at the beach.

Throughout my career, I’ve been drawn to the energy and rhythm of school life, working in both the nonprofit and education worlds. I’ve had the pleasure of being part of Advancement and Admissions teams, and most recently coordinated special events at Cate School. Now, I’m thrilled to be at the heart of it all—serving as the Office Manager and Registrar here at SBMS. It brings me so much joy to support our community and help things run smoothly behind the scenes.

When I’m not at my desk, you’ll most likely find me combing the beach for rocks and shells, exploring local trails, or chasing golden-hour sunsets. I love being outdoors and will absolutely stop to meet every dog I pass. I’m so grateful to be part of this amazing community, and I can’t wait to greet you in person or over the phone!

Science, 8th Grade

Science, 8th Grade

With nearly 20 years of experience as a science educator, I’ve had the joy of working with students both in the classroom and out in the field since 2004. I earned my bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science from Stockton College of New Jersey, and later completed my California teaching credential and Master’s in Education at UCSB.

This year, I’m thrilled to begin my journey at SBMS teaching 8th grade Life Science. I’m especially excited to help students think like scientists—observing, questioning, and making sense of the natural world through engaging, hands-on exploration.

When I’m not teaching, you’ll often find me adventuring outdoors with my family, playing soccer in a women’s league in Ventura, or learning how to surf. I also love traveling and continue to grow my Spanish language skills whenever I can.

I believe that science is not just a subject—it's a way of seeing the world. I can’t wait to share that perspective with our students.

Human Resources and Accounting Associate

I’m proud to be part of the Santa Barbara Middle School community, now in my fourth year as the Human Resources and Accounting Associate—and as a parent! My daughter, Alia, started at SBMS in sixth grade, and it’s been such a joy to experience this journey alongside her.

Before joining SBMS, I spent 20 years running our family business, Island Brewing Company in Carpinteria—so if you’ve ever visited, we may have already crossed paths!

I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Marine Biology from UCSB, and a fun fact about me is that I hold a 100-ton USCG Captain’s License. My husband Mark, our two kids (Alia and Toby), and I are avid travelers. We even spent 15 months sailing from Grenada to Maine aboard our 44-foot boat, exploring the Caribbean and U.S. East Coast.

It’s been an honor to grow with this incredible community over the past few years, and I look forward to many more adventures ahead—on land and at sea!

As a lifelong athlete, I have the joy of helping lead our sports electives, especially volleyball and soccer. Though I’m now the “retired” Business Manager of Santa Barbara Middle School, I continue to stay involved by helping guide the exciting development of a Master Site Plan for our beautiful campus—which we’re now proud to call our own.

I truly love being part of the SBMS community. No matter how many times I think I’ve stepped away, I always find myself drawn back in. This place has a way of keeping you connected—and I wouldn’t have it any other way!

I feel incredibly fortunate to call Santa Barbara both my hometown and now my professional home at SBMS. I studied Sociology with a minor in Women’s Studies at UC Santa Barbara, and later earned my Master’s in Education from UC Davis. I spent six years teaching Kindergarten and first grade in the San Jose area, followed by a year as an Academic Dean—but I found my true professional passion when I transitioned into admissions in 2015.

While I’ve been at SBMS for several years now, each season here continues to inspire me. I love working closely with both students and families, and I feel lucky every day to be part of a school community that values relationships, creativity, and curiosity.

Outside of school, I’m a dedicated food enthusiast—whether I’m cooking at home or discovering new local spots. I love to read and chat with my book club, get outside for a sunny hike, and exploring the world through travel.

Dean of Students and Community

My name is Marco Andrade, and I’m a proud middle schooler at heart.
I can still remember the excitement and nerves I felt walking into 7th grade at Santa Barbara Middle School back in 1984. Little did I know that I was beginning a lifelong journey filled with adventure, friendship, and a deep connection to a community that would shape who I am today.

That journey continued through Dos Pueblos High School, Western State College of Colorado, and Western Governors University, where I earned my degree in Business Administration. But SBMS has always been home.

For over three decades, I’ve had the privilege of serving this incredible school across all four sides of our Diamond curriculum—as a teacher, coach, and administrator. Now, as the Dean of Students and Community, I’m dedicated to supporting our students' growth and success by nurturing a healthy, safe, and inclusive environment where they can thrive.

Outside of school, I spend my time laughing, learning, and exploring with my wife, son, and daughter. Whether we’re visiting family in Panama, camping along the coast, or chasing new adventures, we’re always on the move. And when I find a moment to myself, you might catch me on the golf course—or behind a drum kit, rocking out.

Carpe Diem!

History, Grade 8

History, Grade 8

I teach 8th Grade U.S. History at Santa Barbara Middle School. Originally from the Bay Area, I moved to Santa Barbara to attend UCSB, where I earned my BA in History, a Master’s in Education, and a Single Subject Teaching Credential.

Before stepping into my dream role as a teacher at SBMS, I worked at the Santa Barbara Historical Museum—an experience that deepened my love for the stories of the past. My greatest passions are history, travel, and food. I’ve had the privilege of exploring six continents, and I love weaving those real-world experiences into my lessons to bring history to life for my students.

Outside of the classroom, you’ll find me cycling, hiking, cooking, reading, or cheering on the 49ers and Liverpool F.C.

I’ve been a part of the SBMS community for over 30 years, and it continues to be a place of inspiration and creativity for me. Together with my husband, Eric Lehman, we form the “Eric and Maureen team” that brings our spring musical productions to life—one of my favorite SBMS traditions.

I teach a class called Art Journals, where students explore self-expression through creativity, and I especially love teaching singing. I’ve been singing professionally for most of my life, and my passion for the performing arts started early. I first fell in love with youth theater in Gaviota and later served as the Theater Arts Director at Cold Spring School.

Being part of this vibrant community where creativity and collaboration thrive continues to be a joy and an honor.

9th Grade World History | Life Skills

My journey to SBMS fills me with deep gratitude, and I’m honored to contribute to the Life Skills program, lead electives, and support our expedition teams since joining the community in 2022. I’m passionate about walking alongside young people as they explore meaningful questions and believe that Nature is one of our greatest teachers.

Over the past decade, my work with youth has taken me across the globe—from guiding teenage Buddhist monks in Nepal and Christian missionaries in the Philippines, to serving in the Peace Corps’ Youth in Development program in Guatemala, and supporting struggling teens through Wilderness Therapy in Utah. I hold a B.A. in Psychology and Philosophy, and an M.S.Ed. from the University of Miami.

When I’m not in the classroom or out on trail, I find rest in hiking long-distance routes like the Pacific Crest Trail, riding my motorcycle across the country, or whittling spoons from a good branch. My family and I live up in Refugio Canyon, where we spend our days building our dream nonprofit, Gaia Farm.

Born in Quebec, Canada, Pierre-Alexandre—better known as P.A.—is a proud 2007 graduate of SBMS who has turned his passion for food into a meaningful career. After completing the Santa Barbara City College Culinary Arts program, P.A. honed his skills in the kitchen at the renowned restaurant Julienne, where he eventually rose to the role of Chef de Cuisine.

“I might be a little obsessed with food,” he admits, “but behind that obsession is a deeper mission: to positively impact the community by educating and inspiring others through the power of cooking.”

P.A. brings a holistic approach to his craft—one that emphasizes sourcing quality ingredients, preparing them in thoughtful and creative ways, eating and sharing meals in community, and preserving what’s left. His enthusiasm is infectious, and his name might as well stand for “Positive Attitude”—something he brings to everything he does.

Now back at SBMS, P.A. is excited to help evolve and elevate the school’s food program—both on campus and on trips—infusing it with purpose, flavor, and joy.

Resident Artist / Facilities Support

Richard Wilke is a Santa Barbara artist and printmaker who worked with the likes of Robert Rauschenberg, Claes Oldenburg, and Walt Disney. Richard's portfolio boasts a variety of media including various printmaking techniques, painting, drawing, set design, and wood carvings. Some of his recent body of work – woodblock prints – exhibits his love of carving and international design in a graphic and stunning grouping of prints.

Richard's intricate drawings are transferred to a block of wood which he carves by hand in great detail before printing on handmade rice paper. The larger images are silkscreen prints on silk which gives the rustic designs an elegant feel. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art at Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles, now part of the California Institute of the Arts.

See more of his work in the halls and rooms of Santa Barbara Middle School, where he continues to inspire young artists. He spent a good part of the summer of 2016 creating the artwork that now adorns the pillars at the front of the school. Another large project is the scores of paintings he created for the Vera Cruz House on Santa Barbara Street near Farmer's Market. He has more information and images on his website.

I’m the chef and operator of the legendary Alley Wagon—our mobile cooking rig that feeds bodies and fuels adventures. I handle it all: planning the menus, shopping the local spots, and preparing every bite. Wherever the Alley Wagon rolls, I roll with it. Sometimes that means cooking for the whole school on epic outings, and other times just for a small crew—but it’s always from scratch, with heart.

On campus, I also lead electives, coach sports, and help guide students through hands-on, real-life learning experiences that go beyond the classroom.

Back in 1985-86, I was the first SBMS alum to return on a school trip, and a year later, the first alum to be hired on staff. After some time out in the world—owning restaurants, cooking professionally, and soaking up life—I came back home to SBMS in 2012, ready to serve the community that helped shape me. In many ways, I never really left.

One of the greatest joys of this journey was having my daughter Kate join as a student in 2016-17. Getting to share this magical place with her was a full-circle moment—and a reminder of why this school means so much.

SBMS is more than a place I work—it's a place I live, create, and pass on what I’ve learned.

Fine Arts

Class of 1993

I teach Fine Arts electives at SBMS, where students can dive into Freehand Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, Book Arts, Fiber Arts, and Mixed-Media. It’s truly a dream come full circle to be back teaching at the school that first sparked my creative soul—I’ve been on faculty since 2015.

As a student here in the early ‘90s, I discovered my love for singing under the stars and making art by headlamp on camping trips. That magic stayed with me. I went on to study Fine Art and Psychology at Pitzer College, spending a life-changing year abroad in Ecuador, and later earned a Master’s in Art Education from the University of New Mexico.

My path as an art educator has taken me across the globe—from the desert landscapes of New Mexico to the coastlines of Australia to right here in Santa Barbara—teaching art to kids of all ages. I love exploring just about any creative outlet, but I’m especially drawn to watercolors, photography, fashion design, collage, and dance. I’m always looking for the little sparks of beauty—the quiet details, the unexpected textures, the joy in simple moments.

When I’m not making art or guiding students, you’ll find me hanging out with my favorite people: my husband Geoff and our two sweet, spirited boys, Micah and Griffin. Being a parent has given me the chance to see the world all over again—chasing clouds, twirling in circles, and finding inspiration in the everyday magic.

English, 7th Grade / Garden

English, 7th Grade / Garden

I’m Teresa Jamison, and I’ve been part of the SBMS community since 1996, currently teaching 7th grade English and leading afternoon electives in beading, gardening, and walking.

My educational journey has deep roots in Santa Barbara—from SBHS’s ROP Greenhouse Occupations and DPHS, where I founded the Environmental Awareness Club in the late ’70s, to SBCC, Semester at Sea, and Cal Poly SLO, where I earned my BA. I later completed my M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in English from Cal Lutheran and pursued TESL certification at UCSB.

While teaching English as a second language at both SBCC and UCSB, I developed a deeper love for grammar and communication, which I now bring into my classroom through project-based learning. One of my biggest goals is to help students uncover their passions and imagine how those passions could shape their futures.

I once biked along the Great Wall of China, but on SBMS trips, you’ll usually find me at the “tail”—walking, talking, singing, encouraging, cajoling, and conquering mountains with students. On weekends, I’m most often found kayaking, paddleboarding, or tending to my mini-urban farm.

Hi, I’m Teresa Jamison, and I’ve been teaching English at SBMS since 1996. These days, I get to spend my mornings with our incredible 7th graders in English class, and my afternoons leading electives in beading, gardening, and walking—connecting creativity, nature, and movement with learning.

My educational journey began right here in Santa Barbara. I explored greenhouse occupations through SBHS ROP, founded the Environmental Awareness Club at Dos Pueblos in the late '70s, studied at SBCC, and spent a life-changing semester traveling the world with Semester at Sea. I earned my BA from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, an M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in English from Cal Lutheran, and completed the TESL program at UCSB.

While teaching English as a Second Language at SBCC and UCSB, I developed a deep appreciation for grammar, communication, and the power of language—tools I now bring into the classroom through project-based learning. One of my greatest joys is helping students uncover their passions and imagine how they might one day transform them into professions.

I once biked along the Great Wall of China, but on school trips, you’ll usually find me with the “tail”—walking, talking, singing, encouraging, cajoling, and climbing mountains alongside our students. On weekends, I’m most likely kayaking, paddleboarding, or tending to my little urban farm.

SBMS is a place where learning meets life, and I’m grateful every day to be a part of that journey with our students.
